• Introduction _____________
Thank you for purchasing an iMate adapter. This document contains important information about
using your iMate with the iMate driver software. Please read this entire document and the iMate
Troubleshooting document before calling for technical assistance.
The software allows ADB devices such as dongles and others that have custom drivers to operate
with the iMate adapter. The iMate driver provides the functionality of the ADB manager. This
allows ADB devices that require custom drivers to operate on an iMac, Lombard Powerbook, or
a Mac with a USB card. Some ADB devices such as keyboards, mice, and bar code readers operate
with the iMate without any driver software at all or only need a driver to support special functions.
You may not need to install the iMate driver for these devices.
• New Features _____________
The iMate driver version 1.4 allows ADB devices with custom drivers and ADB dongles to continue
to work after putting the new PowerBook “Lombard” in sleep mode and waking it back up. This new
version also allows for true ADB reinitializations (ADB reinits) when needed. If you're upgrading
from a pre-1.0.x version, make sure to remove both the iMate Enabler and the iMate USB Module
from your Extensions folder, and replace them with the new iMate USB Driver (single file).
Version 1.41 makes some small changes that could effect the CAPS LOCKS in certain situations and
fixes a small problem with the Alphasmart keyboards.
Version 1.5b1 provides tighter integration between the iMate Fiddler and iMate the driver. Changes
made with the iMate Fiddler application are now implemented immediately. This makes tuning the
performance of an ADB device much easier. Some other changes were also made that may improve
reliability when awakening from sleep mode on the new PowerBook G3 “Lombard” models.
• Installation _____________
If you are using an original iMac Rev A or Rev B model (These are the original Bondi blue models
operating at 233 Mhz.), you will probably need to upgrade the ROM and Firmware of the iMac to
use the iMate driver. Other Mac models such as the Blue and White G3s, Lombard Powerbooks, and
the “flavored” 266 Mhz iMacs should come with the correct firmware and ROM.
For 233 Mhz iMacs make sure your iMac is updated using the iMac updater version 1.1 and iMac
Firmware update (both released 12/17/98).

Next, install the iMate USB Driver into the Extensions Folder inside your System Folder and restart
your machine. The easiest way to do this is to drag the driver ontop of the system folder and release
it. You will see a dialog box that reads “This item needs to be...”. Click OK and restart your machine.
After the driver is installed you should see an ADB icon as the first extension to
load during startup. If the iMate is connected it should not have a red “x” through
it. If the icon does not appear or has a red “x” through it when the iMate is attached,
please read the troubleshooting text that comes with this Read Me.
* If you are using ADB devices that require special software for full functionality, make sure those
devices and the iMate are connected at startup or reboot. These devices will not function correctly
if they are “hot swapped” (attached while the machine is running).
• Operation _____________
Using the iMate and/or iMate driver is transparent. If you are using an ADB device that uses custom
driver software, please make sure to install that software and refer to the manufacturer’s
documentation for help. When possible use the latest version of the manufacturer’s software.
